On 30 May, 2013, Dr. Bruno Redeker (Chairman of the Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker-Stiftung, Managing Director of the Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker-Gesellschaft e.V.) personally presented the Carl Friedrich v. Weizsäcker Medal to Michail S. Gorbatschow.
President Michail S. Gorbatschow is the first award recipient of the Carl Friedrich v. Weizsäcker-Medal.
The medal was awarded within the scope of the symposium "Wissen und Verantwortung in unserer Zeit - Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker zum 100. Geburtstag“ in Berlin on 30 June, 2012. Off duty Federal Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher delivered the laudatory speech. Michail S. Gorbatschow was on short notice prevented from coming to Berlin due to his state of health. Mr. Gorbatschow’s granddaughter Anastasia Virganskaya as well as his personal adviser accepted the honor and presented the president’s compliments and thanks.
The medal is being awarded every four years and stands for exceptional life-time achievements, in which essential objectives of v. Weizsäckers’ find expression at the same time.
President Michail S. Gorbatschow was conferred on a distinction – as it is recorded in the document – for his courage to take over and to live responsibility; in appreciation of his credits of preserving – in the arms race of the systems of the world – an open future by mutually applying reason and of preserving the chance to "overcome the accredited institution of war as a means of conflict resolution".
